Caring for your soy candles
Taking proper care of your soy wax candles will ensure that you get the most out of their beautiful fragrance and long burn time. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind:
- They may be little but command respect, caring for your candle wick is a top tip! They are the power house of your candle. Before each use, make sure to trim the wick to approximately 5mm. This helps prevent excessive smoke and soot, ensuring a clean and even burn. As they burn down the jar wick trimmers are a great tool to help with this task - plus avoid sooty fingers!
- A good melt pool is how your scent is generated. Allow your candle to burn for at least two hours (3-4hrs for a larger candle) during its first use. This will help create a full melt pool across the surface of your candle, preventing tunnelling and ensuring an even melt pool for future burns.
- You can have too much of a good thing, avoid burning your candle for more than four hours at a time. This is a safety precaution as exceeding this limit can cause the jar to become too hot. Burning your candle for longer periods also affects the quality of the scent, you may find it smells a bit sooty the next time you light your candle.
- Always place your candle on a heat-resistant surface away from drafts, flammable materials, and out of reach of children or pets. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Nobody wants to ruin there lovely walls with candle wax splatter, so when extinguishing your candle, ensure to blow it out gently to avoid this. Luckily soy wax can be washed away with hot soapy water, but may still leave a stain!
- Worse still you could spill your candle wax on your lovely carpet or floor. To prevent accidents or spills, avoid moving a lit candle while the wax is still melted and hot.
- Soy wax is prone to an affect called frosting. This is where the wax crystallises with changes in temperature which can look like white frosting on the surface - hence the name. This does not affect performance and should clear when burning, however to reduce chances when not in use, store your candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or extreme temperatures. This also helps to maintain their fragrance and quality over time.
- At every nook we put as much effort into the appearance of the jar as the performance of the jar. A little obsessed with home decor, we'd love you to continue to use your candle jar once your candle has burned down.
